Laid-back love nests
If you're among those lovers intent on serenity, you can still find paradise
on Honeymoon Central. But you'll probably need to give up room and maid
service and venture beyond the famous beaches. Armed with suggestions
from Frommer's Maui author Jeanette Foster and others, USA TODAY's Laura
Bly combed the island for places that come closest to the grass-shack
fantasy.
Ho'oilo House
Opened two years ago, this
Bali-inspired five-room B&B in the sunny
foothills of the West Maui Mountains about a 10-minute drive south of
Lahaina provides a Zen-like escape from nearby Kaanapali's high-rises.
Turn-ons: The Kohola and Nalu rooms have spectacular ocean views, and
all five options include sumptuous bathrooms, complete with private outdoor
shower.
Turn-offs: There's a pool, but no hot tub, kitchen facilities or in-room
refrigerators.
Bottom line: All rooms, $275-$295 a night including continental breakfast.
